| Walter served 1942-1945 ( Co. A 104th Inf Regt.). He landed at Cherbourg France on Sept. 9, 1944. He served in the Lorraine Campaign and fought in the battle of Moncourt Woods near Nanci. During the subsequent advance and combat, he received a battlefield promotion to 1st Sergeant as a result of all the officers in his platoon having been killed or wounded. He was wounded by shrapnel on Nov. 11, 1944 and taken off the field. He spent some time in hospitals in France and England before returning to the States. He was awarded the Silver Star for his heroism. 1st Sgt Walter D. Griffin passed away at the fine age of 92 in Jan. 2005. We all miss him, he was a great man. Paul Griffin |
